Traffic in Bangkok is getting very heavy in recent years and often there can be periods of gridlock. During your excursions around the city, if there is heavy traffic which would disrupt your experience, the guide may suggest to take public transportation instead of the car. Please understand they will make these suggestions in order to allow for a better overall experience in Bangkok. The Bangkok Sky Train and Subway are modern, safe and efficient ways to get around town.
BUDDHA IMAGES IN THAILAND: According to Thai Law, foreigners are not allowed to take any Buddha images out of the country. However, if you can produce proof of purchase with a certificate and receipt from the shop, customs may allow you to take the image out but this is not guaranteed and Trails of Indochina cannot influence the decision of the Thai Customs Department. Please be aware that if you are travelling through Thailand and have Buddha images from other countries, i.e. Cambodia, Laos or Vietnam, Thai Customs Officials will require the same proof of purchase. Depart the USA on your independent flight to Bangkok, Thailand. Welcome to Bangkok, Thailand, the metropolis filled with unexpected tranquility hidden within the secret niches that make the city your own. Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport by a private transfer who will take you to your plush hotel located along the bustling streets of the cityscape. The Peninsula Bangkok offers you the luxuries of modern Thailand overlooking the expansive city that surrounds you. Check in to the hotel for overnight.

Day 2: Fri, Jan 6: Bangkok at Leisure
After breakfast, the morning is yours to explore the city at your own pace. Initially the sidewalks of the metropolis can be a bit overwhelming; however, you will quickly become an expert at maneuvering the streets as you discover the open friendliness of the people. The tour leaders will escort those who want to have custom clothes made to Rich Tailor. A map will be provided by the tour leaders to explore the area of art galleries, antique shops, River City, as well as suggested restaurant for lunch (Mandarin Oriental /Sala Rim Naam). All activities are within walking distance from the hotel.
Patpong Area has a night market which does require a taxi. Always insist that taxi driver uses the meter! If he refuses just hail another taxi. Everyone should have a hotel card to show taxi driver to get back to your hotel. Dinner is at the hotel.

Day 3: Sat, Jan 7: Jim Thompson House & Amphawa Floating Market
After breakfast, transfer to visit to the fabulous Jim Thompson House. James Thompson was an American entrepreneur who almost singlehandedly revived the Thai silk trade. The home is made of teak wood and was transferred from Ayutthaya, the old capital of Siam followed by a tour to Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC). Later, free at leisure until 4.00pm, venture to the Floating Market at Amphawa, the afternoon-only famed floating market. Within the calm river, boats are smothered with colorful goods, ranging from mountain melons that are bobbling over the side, to sensational fresh flowers that give a perfume to the water. The energy is palpable, boisterous and alive, filled with people that want to buy and sell, shop and watch. Produce and just caught seafood, fresh made pastries and arranged flowers, there is never an end to the splendor on display at the market. Dinner is at local restaurant before transferring back to the hotel.

Day 4: Sun, Jan 8: Essential Bangkok
After breakfast, depart hotel for Wat Pho in time to experience the monks’ morning chanting ritual. One of the oldest temples in Bangkok, Wat Pho is home to the famous 45m Reclining Buddha; it is also the original school of traditional Thai massage. From here, transfer by coach via Pak Klong Taland Flower Market towards the Grand Palace, the most important and spectacular royal palace in Thailand. The mysterious Emerald Buddha, the most revered Buddha image in Thailand, now is housed here. Transfer to pie to take a shuttle boat to across Chao Phraya River to the Supatra River House Restaurant for a traditional Thai lunch. Return to the hotel for your relaxation. Dinner tonight is at Blue Elephant Restaurant.

Day 5: Mon, Jan 9: Bangkok – Chiang Mai (Air) - Craft Village & Cooking Class
After breakfast, leave the hotel for the flight to Chiang Mai, the stronghold of culture, ethnic diversity and mountain vistas. Upon arrival, picked up and depart for an unforgettable experience as we visit San Kamphaeng Handicraft Village, the famed Chiang Mai’s craft districts selling celadon ceramics, paper umbrellas, silver, teak furniture, and beautiful silk weavings. Lunch at local restaurant. Then, transfer to your resort & spa for check in and relaxation. The late afternoon brings with it a feast for the senses with a small cooking class at A Lot of Thai, a family run class established in 2001. Your instructor blends science and tradition bringing the flavors and culture of the food to rich, new life. You are familiar with the comfortable flavors; however, the technique adds new depth to pad Thai and massaman curry. They even tout a visit from acclaimed chef Gordon Ramsey. Transfer back to the resort.

Day 6: Tue, Jan 10: Elephant Trekking Safari, Hill Tribe Village & Khantoke Dinner Show
Today is a spectacle of fantasy where you have much of the countryside at your whim and desire. In the Mae Sa Elephant Camp you can discover the jungle on the back of the graceful and friendly animal. Your elephant stops from time to time to clear a path, pushing a tree to the side or clearing roots as a reminder to itself of the way it came. Back at the camp you can visit the nursery. Baby elephants romp and play, learning from their elders throughout their adolescence on how to be proper elephants. Feed them bananas and feel their snouts wrap around your fingers as they take the fruit from your hand. Then Elephant Trekking safari, one or two guests per elephant. Wherever the day takes you, there is no doubt that you will discover something magnificent. Lunch is at beautiful orchid local restaurant. Then, depart for an unforgettable experience as we visit hill tribe villages including the Padong, Palong and the “long-necked” Karen tribe at Baan Tong Luang Eco-Agriculture Village. Later, return to your resort for relaxation. In the evening you will enjoy a traditional meal at Khantoke Dinner Show.

After breakfast, depart hotel for airport to take flight from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Upon arrival in BKK walk to connecting flight point, clear Immigrations and catch flight to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city is a mixture of old world and new world, where French colonial buildings decorate neighborhoods and pagodas ordain gardens, all while the second tallest skyscraper in Southeast Asia towers over the entire city Vietnam. Your group will be met upon arrival in Hanoi and transferred to the hotel for a warm reception followed by welcoming dinner at Pots’n Pans Restaurant, featuring traditional French and Vietnamese dishes.

Day 8: Thu, Jan 12: Hanoi Art & Cocktail Party at Vietnam Art Gallery
Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam, The city is a mixture of old world and new world, where French colonial buildings decorate neighborhoods and pagodas ordain gardens, all while the second tallest skyscraper in Southeast Asia towers over the entire city. Begin the day with visits to Temple of Literature-the first University in Vietnam with its row of Steles recording the names of its successful graduates. Continue to the Museum of Ethnology is a fascinating insight into the culture diversity of Vietnam. It is a newly built, hands-on museum with displays of art and everyday objects from various tribes. The exhibits are well labeled in English and it is rewarding to just wander round in your own time. Lunch is at Quan An Ngon Restaurant. Transfer back to the hotel for free at leisure before we meet again for Ms. Suzanne Lecht, an art consultant who has lived in Hanoi for many years. She’ll give you overview of the contemporary art scene in Vietnam followed by a cocktail party for the group at her art gallery and studio-Vietnam Art Gallery. Dinner is at Bun Cha Huong Lien (Obama and Bourdain’s menu: barbecued pork with noodles & Hanoi beer).

Day 9: Fri, Jan 13: Hanoi Culture
After breakfast, depart hotel for Ba Dinh Square, site of Ho Chi Minh’ Tomb, his House on Stilts, and the One-Pillar Pagoda. Drive back to central Hanoi for a walking tour through the Old Quarter to enjoy the bustling local life and stop at Restored Old House at 87 Ma May for an overview about Hanoian culture and appreciation for ancient Northern architecture. After lunch at Cha Ca La Vong Restaurant, back to the hotel for your own exploration. Dinner is at Green Tangerine Restaurant, a fine-dining restaurant in a private mansion with grounds.

Day 10: Sat, Jan 14: Hanoi Countryside
After breakfast at your hotel, depart for 1.5- hour drive to the ancient village of Duong Lam, a typical agricultural village in the north of Red River Delta. Home to around 300 houses built three or four centuries ago, wander along Duong Lam’s narrow alleyways to explore rural life and Vietnam’s ancient architecture. The cultural and historical vestiges of Duong lam is include Mong Phu Communal House, Princess Mia Pagoda (built in the 15th century), and the old Catholic Church. The Village Well-the traditional feature of communal life-is also worth a look. Finish your tour at an ancient house owned by a couple where you can have a chat with the friendly owners and share their life experiences over a cup of tea. Drive back to Hanoi to enjoy lunch at Pho Thin Restaurant followed by a cyclo tour through the Old Quarter to admire the bustling local life. Dinner is at Wild Rice Restaurant, tastefully designed and the architecture is almost as interesting as the food.

Day 11: Sun, Jan 15: Hanoi Handicraft Demonstration
Morning excursion to handicraft village on the rural outskirts of Hanoi is Dong Ho Village, known for its long-preserved art of making pictures. Dong Ho folk painting uses woodcut prints depicting the daily activities and religious practices of farmers in the Red River Delta. Meet Mr. Nguyen Dang Che or his son according to his health condition, one of the few remaining of artisans specializing in Dong Ho folk painting. Visit his studio to learn more the procedure of carving, printing and the local folk tales represented in the paintings through their demonstration. Head back to Hanoi for lunch at Quan An Ngon Restaurant followed by a visit to 54 Traditions Gallery where you’ll learn to create Batiks with a Hmong woman and have a chance to interact with her way of life (and share your own). Dinner is at La Badiane Restaurant, a French gem in Hanoi.

Day 12: Mon, Jan 16: Hanoi – Ha Long bay (overland)
On our morning 3.5-hour drive to Ha Long Bay stopping for a break at Dai Viet center-the best place to stop and stretch your legs en route. Arrive in time for lunch aboard our private Junk, In the afternoon you will be able to step onto the white sands of Lan Ha Bay, just east of Cat Ba Town, traditional fishing village by rowboat. The soft, powdery beach gives you an isolated majesty from the 300 karsts in the distance. Dinner is on board as we cruise.

Day 13: Tue, Jan 17: Ha Long Bay – Hanoi – Hue (Air)
Morning activities include a Tai Chi class on the upper deck of our junk and a tour to thousands of islands are situated within the archipelago including Dau Go Island where a colorful cave can be found displaying stalactites and stalagmites that rise and fall over 60 feet. The sunlight causes a shift in the hues of the stone, from yellow to green, blue to gold. The powdery sand is pressed up against the water on one side and lush greenery on the other. An early lunch is served on board followed by heading back to Hanoi for the evening flight to Hue. Upon arrival, welcome and transfer to the lovely hotel in Hue, former Royal Capital City of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945 during Nguyen dynasty.

Day 14: Wed, Jan 18: Hue Culture & Home-Hosted Lunch at the Former Princess Home
Morning dragon boat ride to the legendary Thien Mu Pagoda, followed by a visit to the Citadel and the ruins of the old Imperial City. Then take a short walk to the Museum of Royal Antiques during the NGUYEN dynasty. Lunch at the Royal Home of the Princess Ngoc Son. In the afternoon, drive to the elaborate Khai Dinh Royal Tomb, with the elements of eastern and western designs. Back to the hotel for at leisure beforedinner at Ancient Hue Restaurant.

Day 15: Thu, Jan 19: Hue Countryside & Handicraft Demonstration
Heading off-the-beaten-path to east of Hue to visit Thanh Toan tile-roofed Bridge. The bridge is beautiful but the amazing part is the surrounding area, the unique local market and Agriculture Museum nearby... Then excursion to Phuong Duc bronze casting village to meet with Nguyen Van Dao's family who devoted to cast weapons and royal utensils (lamp, incense joss-stick holders, urns, bells,statues) for the Nguyen's Dynasty followed by lunch at Lac Thien Restaurant. Back to your hotel for free at leisure before evening royal dinner at Tha Om Restored Royal Garden Home, a very special dinner.

Day 16: Fri, Jan 20: Hue – Danang – Hoian (overland)
Morning departure by coach for Hoian-The UNESCO heritage site with a stop at Lang Co fishing village enroute. Drive over the Hai Van Pass with its spectacular panorama of the coastline. Visit the China Beach in Danang, known for "R & R" during the Vietnam or American War. Continue on to the former international trading port of Hoian, the ancient town. Join lunch at the local restaurant before check in at the beautiful resort and spa overlooking to Bon River. Free at leisure at arts and crafts town and its mixed of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese architecture followed by being transferred to enjoy the fun Water Puppet show followed by dinner at the Market Cooking School & Restaurant (by Ms Vy with Morning Glory Restaurant)

After breakfast, take a walking tour of Hoian's narrow cobblestone streets includes former merchant's houses, lantern workshops, Phuc Kien Assembly Hall, the 400-year old Japanese Covered Bridge and the colorful bazzar followed by driving to the peaceful rural outskirt to visit the private home of the most celebrated chef Duc Mango for an interactive home-hosted lunch with his family. Chat with him to share the passion of this and talented chef with in depth knowledge on the Hoian food scene as well as his journey around the world. You’ll be amazed with his own design house for the traditional style decorated with colorful mosaic of fish and flowers and for the view of nearby mountains and rice paddies…Transfer back to the resort for your further exploration. Day 18: Sun, Jan 22: Hoian – Danang – Dalat (Air)
Transfer to Danang airport for morning flight to Dalat, the South-Central Highlands town of Vietnam. On arrival, welcome at the airport and transfer to hotel. Dalat, a cool alternative to the usual steamy Vietnamese destination. Pine forests, locally grown avocados, and artichoke tea aren't common place in Vietnam, but they are in Dalat, a former French colonial hill station with eternal spring weather. Free at leisure followed by a visit to Dalat Market and the peaceful Xuan Huong Lake, which is in the shape of a crescent moon. Dinner is at hotel restaurant, Le Cafe de la Poste.

Day 19: Mon, Jan 23: Dalat Culture & Ethnic Minority Village
The day begins with a visit to Lat Minority Village, en route you can see the vegetable fields at the foot of Langbian Moutain, this spot has five vocanic peaks ranging in altitude from 2100 m to 2400 m. Travel to village to admire farming tools, hand-woven brocade products, local vegetable plantation, musical instruments, traditional stilt houses and to taste "T,nom"- a special fermented rice wine of the Lat. Back to Dalat for lunch at local restaurant followed by a city tour including Hang Nga Crazy House, Bao Dai's
Summer Palace. Dinner tonight is at Le Rabelais Restaurant with Nouveau French Cuisine from Dalat Palace.

Day 20: Tue, Jan 24: Dalat Ethnic Minority Village & Craft Demonstration
Morning excursion to Ma Danh Village in the outskirts of Dalat to meet Ya Tuat artisan (Churu person) to see how he and his community preserve the silver ring casting in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. It takes couples of hours for him to demonstrate the casting products. Followed by another visit to K'long village for visiting K'ho tribles and their traditional weaving methods. Lunch will be served at local restaurant. On the way back to Dalat, you'll visit the Chicken Village where K'ho people inhabit with the huge cock statue. End of the day by enjoyed peaceful atmosphere at Truc Lam Zen Monastery, the largest Zen monastery of Vietnam and Tuyen Lam Lake. Dinner is at Trong Dong, intimate restaurant in Dalat.

Day 21: Wed, Jan 25: Dalat – HCMC /Saigon (Air)
This morning, board a short flight to Saigon (HCMC). This vibrant city blends charming colonial architecture with an expanding a new district of skyscrapers and also offers the best shopping in Vietnam. Upon arrival, welcome and transfer to the Museum of Vietnam History where you'll discover a thousand years of Khmer and Vietnamese culture. The balance of the day is free, perhaps to shop, visit an art gallery, or sample the excellent Vietnamese cuisine. Dinner is at TIB Restaurant, multi-faceted fusion dining experience.

Day 22: Thu, Jan 26: Saigon – Mekong Delta
Following breakfast, departs for 2.5 hours (59 miles from Saigon) to My Tho, the closet Mekong Delta area center. You'll see one of many floating markets by long wooden boat where buyers and sellers exchange goods. The Mekong River separates into several branches. Beyond its bank, rice paddies extend to the horizon, small businesses create rice paper, rice sweets, and rice cakes and even rice wine. You'll have a chance to sample the tropical fruits that grown in the lush vegetation, and bee farms sell local honey. Lunch will be served on boat excursions on the river. Head back to Saigon in the afternoon for free at leisure before going out for AO Show at the Opera House, it’s very entertaining. Dinner is at Xu Restaurant Lounge.

Day 23: Fri, Jan 27: Cu Chi Tunnels, Saigon Culture & Gala Dinner at Majestic Hotel
Did you know? "Tunnel Rats". Today's visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels, the network of tunnels in Cu Chi district linked VC support bases over a distance of some 250 kilometeres from the outskirts of Saigon all the way to the Cambodian border. Back to Saigon for lunch at Quan Bui Restaurant followed by a visit to Reunification Palace, the former presidential residence, will give you a vivid view of the Vietnam that was. Optional tours include Notre Dame Cathedral, Post Office, War Remnants Museum, Binh Tay wholesale market or Ben Thanh Market...Gala dinner is at the hotel.

The tour price does not include personal insurance. Travelers are highly recommended to purchase Trip Insurance & Travel Insurance upon commitment of the booking in case of force majeure. Trip Insurance covers the cost of your trip should you be forced to cancel your trip before you start the trip. Travel Insurance covers such costs as emergency and medical evacuation, hospital fees, property loss, etc which could possibly happen during the trip.
